Rough Collie Intelligence: Five Dimensions, Not One Score
The most common mistake about Rough Collies is borrowing the Border Collie's data. They are separate breeds with separate working histories, and we have only 73 Rough Collies assessed — so this page describes the breed qualitatively and points you to the Border Collie page for the numbers that actually belong to it.

Why there are no Rough Collie scores on this page
Only 73 Rough Collies have been assessed in our research sample, well below our 150-dog publishing threshold. The Border Collie figures you'll see elsewhere on this site (515 dogs) are a different breed and do not transfer here.
We publish scores only for breeds with at least 150 assessed dogs. You can see every breed that clears that bar in the Canine Cognition Data Center.
What Rough Collies Were Actually Built to Think About
Rough Collies come from Scottish droving stock: moving livestock along roads over distance, staying with the flock, and alerting rather than working sheep with the intense eye that defines the Border Collie.
Then came a second selection pressure that Border Collies never had — Victorian show breeding, and later a television-driven popularity boom that prioritised coat and expression over work.
The result is a sensitive, watchful, notably vocal dog with much of the herding drive softened. Assuming Border Collie behaviour will land you with the wrong training plan.
How Rough Collies Tend to Score Across the Five Dimensions
These are population-level tendencies drawn from Dognition's aggregated assessment data — not predictions about your dog. Individual dogs regularly defy their breed's typical pattern.
Communication
Often highBreed-typical description, not our data: droving alongside a handler selects for reading human direction.
Empathy
Often highBreed-typical description, not our data: the breed is consistently described as sensitive to household mood and to raised voices.
Reasoning
Highly variableNo adequate sample for this breed. Border Collie reasoning figures do not apply.
Memory
Highly variableNo adequate sample. We won't publish a figure.
Cunning
Highly variableNo adequate sample. Reports range from inventive to entirely deferential.
Where Rough Collies Shine
- Gentle and sensitive with children — softer than most herding breeds
- Strongly oriented to human direction and easy to keep close
- Moderate exercise needs compared with a Border Collie
- Alert without being a heavy guarding breed
What Trips Owners Up
- Vocal by default — herding-line barking needs early management
- Sensitivity means shouting sets training back rather than speeding it up
- Heavy coat requires serious grooming and limits hot-weather activity
- MDR1 drug sensitivity is common in the breed — test before medicating
Training That Matches the Rough Collie Mind
Match the method to the mind. More in our dog training tips hub and the top 20 cognitive games.
Manage the barking early
Teach an interrupt cue and remove the trigger sightlines before the habit becomes the dog's default job.
Keep the tone low
For a sensitive breed, quiet cues and reward-based training outperform correction by a wide margin.
Moderate, varied activity
Long sniffy walks and simple trick chains suit them better than the relentless drilling Border Collies enjoy.
Test the individual
Without a breed-level sample, your dog's own assessment is the only reliable cognitive profile.
Rough Collie Intelligence FAQs
Are Rough Collies as smart as Border Collies?
They're different breeds and we can't compare them from our data — we have 515 Border Collies assessed but only 73 Rough Collies. Rough Collies were bred for droving and, later, for the show ring, which is a different history from the Border Collie's herding work.
Are Rough Collies good family dogs?
Generally yes. They're gentler and less demanding than Border Collies, with barking and grooming as the main practical costs.
Do Rough Collies bark a lot?
Many do. Droving dogs used voice to move stock, and the tendency survives. Early training and trigger management make it manageable.
