Golden Retriever potty training
Goldens house-train easily but hold a strong desire to be near you, so accidents cluster around being shut away or left waiting.
- Go outside with the puppy every time rather than sending it out alone — for a social breed, your presence is what makes the trip reinforcing.
- Reward within two seconds of finishing, outside, with quiet praise plus a small treat.
- Keep a consistent feeding schedule; predictable intake makes output predictable.
- Expect excitement urination in adolescence and greet arrivals calmly and low-key rather than correcting it.
Most common mistake: Scolding accidents. In an empathy-led breed, this often produces hiding behaviour, which makes house training slower, not faster.
