Border Collie potty training
Strong memory means Border Collies map surfaces and locations quickly — the risk is that they map the wrong one just as permanently.
- Pick a single outdoor spot and use the same exit door every time for the first two weeks so the route itself becomes the cue.
- Attach a quiet verbal marker the moment elimination starts, not after — the association forms on timing, not volume.
- Take a puppy out on a 45-minute clock while awake, and immediately after sleeping, eating, or any burst of play.
- Clean accidents with an enzymatic cleaner; residual scent re-cues the location for a breed with this much scent memory.
Most common mistake: Letting the dog have unsupervised indoor freedom too early — one unnoticed accident on a rug can establish a location habit that takes weeks to overwrite.
