New podcast ‘DogSmarts’ with Dr. Brian Hare

Dr. Brian Hare has a new podcast that launches today! ‘DogSmarts’ is sponsored by Purina Pro Plan BRIGHT MIND, and its six episodes explore the rich mental lives and cognitive abilities of our canine companions. How do lost dogs find their way home? Why do we love our dogs so much? How do dogs learn words? And what actually happens inside an aging dog’s brain?
Brian interviews the world’s leading canine cognition experts, answers penetrating questions, and has a lot of fun in the process. Guests include researchers who have spent decades studying how dogs read human gestures, remember locations, form attachments, and problem-solve their way through everyday life.
What each episode covers
- The genius of dogs — why the science of canine cognition has exploded over the last twenty years, and what it has revealed about how dogs think.
- Communication — the surprising ways dogs read human faces, follow pointing, and use eye contact to build a bond that no other animal shares with us.
- Navigation — how dogs build mental maps, use scent trails, and, in some remarkable cases, find their way home across dozens of miles.
- Word learning — the story of Chaser, the border collie who learned more than a thousand object names, and what her ability tells us about your dog’s untapped vocabulary.
- Love and attachment — the neuroscience of the human–dog bond, and why oxytocin loops between owners and dogs look so much like those between parents and infants.
- Aging brains — what BRIGHT MIND nutrition research is teaching us about keeping senior dogs sharp, engaged, and playful into their final years.
If you have ever wondered what your dog is thinking when they tilt their head at you, or how much of the world they actually understand, this is the show for you. Once you have finished listening, you can put the science to work at home: the Dognition Assessment uses the same games featured in the research Brian and his guests discuss.
‘DogSmarts’ is available on iTunes and Google Play and features two short and four full-length episodes examining various dimensions of canine cognition.
