4 Pro Tips for Capturing Your Dog's Inner Genius
Photographing dogs isn't always easy (especially when treats or squirrels are involved!). Here are four quick tricks to elevate your dog photography game:
1. Get Down on Their Level
Instead of taking photos from above, crouch down or lie on the floor to meet your dog at eye level. This changes the perspective entirely, making the photo feel intimate, engaging, and centered in their world.
2. Embrace Natural Light
Flash photography can startle your pup and often causes harsh glares or glowing eyes. Whenever possible, shoot outdoors in shaded areas or near a bright indoor window. Soft, natural light brings out the beautiful textures in their fur and the sparkle in their eyes.
3. Focus on the Eyes
A dog's eyes speak volumes about their cognitive state — curiosity, affection, playfulness, or intense focus. Use a squeaky toy or a high-value treat placed right above your camera lens for just a second to get those ears perked up and eyes locked onto you.
4. Capture Their Candid Personality
Don't worry about getting a perfectly posed picture! Some of the best photos capture raw personality: mid-yawns, goofy tongue-outs, intense toy-slaying, or peaceful napping. Let their unique quirks shine through.
